'Young photographer's postcards of worst aspects of Town'
By Charlene Mitchell
'GROTTY parts of a town have been catalogued by an aspiring photographer desperate to highlight its decline and stop its further deterioration.
Christopher Nelms, 20, cannot stand how much Ruislip has gone downhill since his childhood.
He has lived in Torrington Road all his life and has recently finished compiling the book of 22 postcards showing how the area has deteriorated.
He said: "I spent two years documenting Ruislip to make people think about their actions.
"I started it initially because I was feeling quite bad about the area. Since my childhood it has changed so much.
"It used to be warm when I was younger. It had such a great sense of well-being.
"People were happy to smile at you when you were walking down the road."
He thinks new housing developments are dominating Ruislip's landscape and the area is isolating its residents.
"The Windmill pub was at the forefront of the community. Within 10 years half these buildings are going to disappear because of the developments.
"They think we are happy putting three or four blocks of flats in the same road.
"It really hurts to see certain individuals obliterating it and treating it with complete disrespect." Mr Nelms is studying photography at the University of Westminster.
He created Ruislip Postcards as part of a project, but decided to take it a step further and got 250 of the books of postcards produced. He has given them to shops in the area, and they are also on sale on his website www. cinphotography.com.'
